Wright/Humboldt Park Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month!
As part of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), Wright College’s Humboldt Park campus recently celebrated Latino Heritage Day. The event highlighted the contributions and culture of Latinos worldwide.
Kenneth Santiago, Dean of the Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center (Wright College Humboldt Park) kicked off the event, saying, “As an Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), Wright College is focused on celebrating diversity. Future events and initiatives will help us further recognize and celebrate the vibrant Latino culture and its contributions to our students and community.”
Sixty-one percent of students in Fall 2015 college credit courses at Wright College Humboldt Park identified as Hispanic. Wright College is a member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU); Dean Santiago and President Potash recently attended the HACU Annual Conference.
Events at Latino Heritage Day included a “Latino Heritage Jeopardy” game featuring trivia about countries, culture, music and heroes. Other activities included heart screenings, Zumba dance instruction, a piñata game and raffle giveaways. Each activity centered on educating students and promoting student involvement at the Humboldt Park campus.
Wright College Humboldt Park appreciates the support of Student Activities Director Katie Ordinario and the Student Government Association (SGA) in making this event a success. The Student Activities Office and SGA sponsored several events for Hispanic Heritage Month. The month-long celebration concludes with a Day of the Dead Skull-Painting Party (October 14, 1 p.m.) and Sabor de Wright (October 15, 11:30 a.m.), featuring free Latin food and music.
