Wright Mentoring Program Helps Mentee and Mentor

Students Christopher Morales and Marianna Vnuk have a symbiotic relationship: They help each other be successful. Mentor Christopher gains important mentoring experience, and mentee Marianna, receives help navigating college. Both students participate in Wright College’s Student Mentoring Program, facilitated through Wright in Your Corner (WiYC), the college’s hub for student activity and support. WiYC connects students to the services and offices that will help them succeed in the classroom, choose courses, explore careers, and network socially.

As a Work Study student, Chris was looking for a part-time job that would help foster his interpersonal skills. A psychology major, he sought an opportunity that could help academically and professionally. In fall 2016, Chris began mentoring students in two courses. That’s when he met Marianna. New to the college and the United States, Marianna needed some assistance acclimating to college life. Chris and Marianna met throughout that fall semester. The experience had a profound effect on both students.

“The mentoring program has been very beneficial academically and personally,” says Marianna. She and Chris were also enrolled in a math class, which made the mentoring experience even more valuable. According to Chris, “Meeting outside of class in Wright in Your Corner is really helpful. The environment facilitates learning.”

Student mentors typically meet with their mentees a few times per semester. The conversations often cover academic and personal topics. The college has designed the entire experience to be holistic, helping students inside and outside the classroom. In many cases, the mentors simply share information about Wright’s wide array of campus resources. Marianna shares, “My first few days of college were very intimidating. Connecting with the mentoring program made things easier.”

Marianna, who has another year at Wright, wishes to transfer so she can complete her nursing degree. Chris, graduating this May, will use his mentoring experience to further his studies: He will transfer to continue his pursuit of a psychology degree.

Even though Chris will soon graduate from Wright, he has passed the mentoring torch to Marianna. This semester, she is serving as a mentor, too. “I want to help others get involved,” she says.
