Profs Bringing Virtualization to IT Classrooms

Starting in Fall 2015, Information Technology (IT) students across City Colleges will have the opportunity to gain experience in some of the technical aspects of virtualization.

Virtualization is a key technology skill set in today’s competitive IT job market.  In simple terms, virtualization simulates computer activity, helping students understand and apply key technology concepts.  The most common application of virtualization is used with network servers, including the study of operating systems, hardware emulation, storage, networking and paravirtualization.

IT faculty selected virtualization as the focus of a recent training session during Faculty Development Week 2015 at Wright College.  Wright College is City Colleges of Chicago’s College to Careers hub for Information Technology education.

Sixteen professors representing six City Colleges—Wright, Daley, Harold Washington, Kennedy King, Malcolm X, and Olive Harvey–participated in the training, exploring such virtualization technologies as VMware, Workstation, VMware Player, VirtualBox, WMware vSphere/ESXi and Center, as well as Microsoft HyperV.

Professors discovered practices for using virtualization technology in the classroom, in conjunction with CISCO Networking Academy, CompTia, VMware Academy, EMC Academy, Palo Alto Academy, and Security and Digital Forensics.

Students across City Colleges in the IT curriculum will participate in lab activities and hands-on practices with VMware Player, Workstation and NDG NETLAB+ in the following courses:

  • CIS 101 ( Computer Science 101)
  • CIS 111 (Computer Operations)
  • CIS 116 (Operating Systems I)
  • Networking (most courses)
  • Security (most courses)

During the faculty training session, faculty members took a moment to show their school spirit, posing in a photo opportunity during Rams Week (see photo).  GO RAMS!
