Get to Know… Networking Student & IT Lab Worker Guadalupe Delgado

Student.Guadalupe DelgadoGuadalupe Delgado’s parents came to the United States from Mexico, seeking richer educational and economic opportunities for their family. His father dreamed that his children would have a better life through education.

As a first-year student at Wright College, Guadalupe carries this dream in his heart and mind. He says that he pictures himself riding on his father’s shoulders and reaching to grab his father’s dream in the horizon. He recognizes that the work ethic that he gained from his father – combined with education – will result in new opportunities to succeed.

Guadalupe recently finished a summer internship with Wright’s College to Careers (C2C) Office and the Office of Information Technology. Wright College is City Colleges of Chicago’s College to Careers hub for Information Technology education.

While a student at North-Grand High School, Guadalupe considered a career in the medical field. However, while participating in an internship, he discovered that medicine was not his calling. The affordability of tuition led him to Wright College, where he registered for a computer class. Once again, Guadalupe participated in internships, this time doing technology-related work at Franciscan Outreach and FreeGeek. These experiences further opened his eyes to the world of technology and set him on the path to a future career in the Information Technology (IT) field.

During his recent summer internship, Guadalupe improved his administrative, customer service and technology skills. His work for the College to Careers Office included project and inventory management, database development, and customer support. As part of his IT work, he provided desk support, deployed images, created automated scripts, and conducted domain migrations.

Guadalupe is drawn to IT because it allows him to solve problems. He also enjoys diagnosing and repairing equipment.

Guadalupe shares the following advice for students weighing their career possibilities: “Do as many internships as you can. Get your hands dirty. Work hard. Get involved. Embrace the challenges you are provided and be willing to learn as much as you can.”

Guadalupe has proven that internships are valuable not only for identifying a career path, but also in opening doors: his summer internship has resulted in a job. Starting in the Fall 20015 session, you will find Guadalupe in the Wright College Computer Lab where he will be working part-time – learning and helping other students as he moves closer to his dream and career goals.
