“There is always hope when you have your goals…” — Tamara Franco

Wright College student and Edison Park resident Tamara Franco is graduating in Spring 2014 and will be transferring to Loyola University in the fall, where she plans to study anthropology. She will join her 20-year-old daughter, Patricia Brita, currently a freshman at Loyola.

Tamara, 45, is originally from Cuba and lived in France and Miami before moving to Chicago in 2010. Today, she proudly calls herself an American, having just become a U.S. citizen.

Her academic journey at Wright began with English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) courses through the Adult Education department. Now, she currently holds a 3.351 cumulative graduation grade point average and is poised to receive her Associate in Arts degree at the 2014 City Colleges of Chicago Commencement ceremony at the UIC Pavilion on May 3.

While at Wright, Tamara learned English while navigating college life, raising her daughter as a single parent, holding a work-study job in the Biology department, and working towards her U.S. citizenship. Tamara utilized many of the student support services that Wright College offers and credits much of her success to the support she received from Wright’s writing, tutoring, and math centers; as well as from her professors and the staff at the Gateway Advising and Transfer Center, including her advisor, Neida Hernandez-Santamaria, Transfer Director Susan Calabrese, and Associate Dean of Student Services Maria Llopiz, among many, many others.

Tamara’s advice to current students or anyone looking to improve their lives through education is to stay focused on their goals: “Your goals and dreams help you to overcome challenges. There will be highs and lows along your journey, but there is always hope when you have your goals to focus on.”

Congratulations, Tamara!
