February Transfer Success Story

Charzele Kenneth Lawson

Master of Science, Walden University (expected 2018)

Bachelor of Arts, Northeastern Illinois University (2015)

Associate in Arts, Wilbur Wright College (2013)

Wright College was a breath of fresh air. I entered Wright on an “ability to benefit” certificate, after having attended seven different grade schools and five different high schools, including Truman Middle College High School. I was dead tired of being in high school. I needed a new atmosphere to help me cultivate my passions.

I was a first generation college student. Transitioning into college was a struggle as I aimed to find my identity and major. Wright bought me time, and a caring community that supported whatever goals I had, which changed a few times. I was able to develop confidence and maturity.

At Wright I found a place of solace, far away from the inner city. It offered me an artistic, free and diverse community of students eager to make a change in their life; opposite to what I had experienced “in the hood.” Some of the courses that influenced me the most were logic, humanities, and social science, especially U.S. history. Once I completed my Associate in Arts degree, I transferred to Northeastern Illinois University where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2015.

Since I graduated from Northeastern, I have been working for the After-School Matters organization, where I lead a teen self-efficacy and music program called ReRight. This spring I will be completing my Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University.

One aspect of my interests I discovered through my undergraduate trajectory was my passion for acting and the performing arts. I currently play the role of an aspiring entertainer, one of Hakeem’s posse, on Fox’s Empire and also enjoy doing live performances.

I learned at Wright how to start and finish something and how to take pride in myself.”
