Dean Madeline Roman-Vargas to Retire

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAfter more than 25 years with the City Colleges of Chicago, including nearly 15 years of providing energetic and committed leadership at Wright College’s Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center (HPVEC), Dean Madeline Roman-Vargas recently announced her intention to retire. Dean Roman-Vargas – or Madeline to all of us who know her and her passion for students – has worked skillfully and successfully with community-based organizations, local high schools, small businesses, and corporate manufacturing advisory councils to create and promote educational and career opportunities for students and members of the community. She has been absolutely essential in making HPVEC a nationally respected educational unit. Madeline’s last day at Wright College will be March 31, 2014.

For more than 10 years, Dean Roman-Vargas successfully organized and directed an annual scholarship fundraising event which served students in financial need. Madeline was also instrumental in creating new programs and improving existing ones, particularly in the areas of allied health, technology, and manufacturing.  One of these initiatives is the highly successful and well-recognized “Carreras en Salud” (Careers in Health Program). She also played a key role in the development of HPVEC’s CIMA Technology Center, including bringing in a stream of technology grants over the last 10 years.

While at Wright College, Madeline has been honored with several awards, recognizing her work and leadership. In 2011, she was named by La Raza Newspaper as one of its Distinguished Women (Mujeres Destacadas) in the area of education.  In 2012, Madeline received the Humanitarian Empowerment Award from the TEECH Foundation (Transforming, Educating and Empowering Children and Humanity).

Thank you, Dean Roman-Vargas, for your contributions and dedication to Wright College and the Humboldt Park community. May you find much happiness, enjoyment, and continued success in the years ahead.
