“Careers in IT” Speakers Series Highlights IT Job Opportunities

City Colleges of Chicago’s College to Careers (C2C) initiative is designed to help prepare Chicagoans for careers in growing industries. Wright College is the C2C hub for the Information Technology (IT) industry, where more than 24,000 job openings are expected to be available in the Chicago area in the next decade.

Wright’s College to Careers department, led by Dean Bonnie Kang, recently launched a “Careers in IT” Speakers Series for the CIS 101 course – Introduction to Computer Science. Through the Speakers Series, IT practitioner panelists share insights about career opportunities in computer science, web development, and networking, within a variety of work environments that include multinational corporations like Cisco Systems and Accenture, as well as smaller tech outfits like video game developer Iron Galaxy Studios and coding training site

CIS 101 – Introduction to Computer Science – is the first required course in the IT pathway and emphasizes ways to analyze problems and develop computer programs to solve them. In CIS 101, students learn basic concepts of computer systems, computer types, cloud computing, and computer programming languages.

“Students in CIS 101 are interested in IT, but many are still undecided on which area they’d like to pursue,” said Dean Kang. “The ‘Careers in IT’ Speakers Series gives students an insider’s perspective on the various fields and opportunities available in the Networking, Computer Science, or Web Development pathways.”

Kennedy-King College hosted the first panel discussion in Professor Daniel Forbes’ CIS 101 class. The discussion featured panelists Jerry Rocco, Public Sector Account Manager from C2C Partner Cisco Systems, Inc., and Aziz Ali, Chief Instructor from

Wright College hosted its first panel on Tuesday, November 11 during Professor Fred Hernandez’s CIS 101 class. Featured speakers included Rich Aldridge, Associate Vice President of IT at the TCS Education System – which includes The Chicago School of Professional Psychology – and Joseph Simons, Senior Software Engineer at video game developer Iron Galaxy Studios.

The new IT pathways in Computer Science (AS), Networking (AAS) and Web Development (AAS/AS) are expected to launch in Spring 2015.
