Awareness Fair Addresses Health Risks in Minority Communities

In spring semester, as part of Black History Month, students in the medical assisting program at Wright College Humboldt Park hosted a Health Awareness Fair to raise awareness about risks affecting communities of color, including high blood pressure and diabetes.

Faculty member Darlene Cureton helped to lead the event, which featured free blood pressure readings for community members. Students learned firsthand how to develop a relationship with patients and take vital signs. Cureton said that she was proud to see students working together and applying what they had learned in class.

During the event, Ada Correa, along with several of her medical assisting classmates, presented research and information about the sugar content in common snacks and beverages. “I learned that a bottle of Coke has 44 grams of sugar,” Correa said. “We really want people to be conscious of what they eat and how certain foods can cause major health problems.”
