A Warm Welcome to Spring Semester

Happy New Year and welcome to the 2014 Spring Semester! A new term is always good for fresh perspectives and a renewed sense of promise and possibilities. It is also a great time to look back on past success and to reinvest in our strong commitment to student success. Wright has outstanding strategic and academic initiative, and as we see streams of students heading to our classrooms, I want to acknowledge and recognize the tremendous energy and effort it took to arrive at this day. Thank you very much.

This collaborative effort required the participation of so many faculty members and staff in all departments: Student Services, College Advisors, Clerical, Adult Ed, Continuing Ed, Financial Aid, IT Support, Business Services, Facilities, Engineering/Housekeeping, Security, and Community Relations. I particularly want to thank Romell Murden-Woldu and her Student Services team for the long hours, care, and effort they invested in ensuring students received the guidance, support, and service they needed to get registered and ready to continue their studies. Our Wright College student ambassadors were superb in their work assisting with registration – we are very grateful.

So many of you played (and continue to play) key roles in shepherding these students through each phase of registration and setting them up for success in the semester ahead. I appreciate your flexibility and attitude of “whatever it takes,” especially as registration hours had to be extended last week because of the weather closures. Students that I see consistently call out the friendly and helpful culture of Wright College.

Speaking of which, neither rain, nor snow, nor polar vortex could prevent Jackie Lonquist, Pat Mannix, John Haugh, and the facilities and engineering teams from ensuring safe, dry, and warm conditions on both the main and Humboldt Park campuses last week. This included staying on campus overnight to prevent freeze-ups during the record-breaking cold spell and opening facilities to ensure Pace work could stay on track at Humboldt Park. Their dedication and professionalism are evident each day, rain or shine or snow, and are invaluable in the face of these unexpected challenges. Their efforts were especially critical to ensure our campuses were ready for the hundreds of students we welcomed during registration.

I’m inspired by your efforts and commitment. I wish you much success with all that you aim to accomplish for our students and campus community this semester.

With gratitude, appreciation, and pride in Wright College –

David Potash
